The Trek...

Between 28 October and 6 November 2011, Matt Stewart, Mike Jackaman and Alan Wearing will trek 100km across the Sahara Desert. We have one goal; to raise a minimum of £7500 for Children with Leukaemia

Matt's Nephew was diagnosed with Leukaemia just before Christmas in 1998, he was only two years old at the time and three years of intensive chemotherapy followed. On completion of the treatment the cancer went into remission, the benchmark for being given the 'all clear' is that the disease must not return within five years... Matt's Nephew is now eight years clear and turned thirteen in December 2009. This milestone birthday acted as the catalyst for Matt to not only sign up for this expedition, but to drag Mike and Alan along for the ride.

The trek in a nutshell...

Arriving in Marrakech, the guys will be driven many hours into the desert to begin their journey. Led by a team of Berbers, with camels carrying supplies, they will walk for hours across unforgiving terrain, with little shelter from the sun the temperature will climb well into the 30's and beyond. Night will be spent sleeping under canvas where the temperature will then plummet close to freezing, as the sun rises they will set off again. Several days and 100kms later they will return to Marrakech...at least that's the plan!

Message from the boys:

No person should have to endure cancer, let alone a child. We wanted to do something different, something that is crazy enough to really make people sit up and take notice, to dig deep into their pockets, I think walking part way across the Sahara should do it! Are we completely nuts? Probably. Are we prepared? We will be. Are we committed? Without any doubt, yes. This is by far the biggest thing any of us has ever done, the words half hearted don't come into it, we will be throwing everything we have at this.

The serious bit...

This trip is a massive undertaking both physically and mentally, but it will all be worthwhile if we can hit our minimum target of £7500. This is where YOU come in. Please donate whatever you can spare, empty all your pockets for change, check down the back of the sofa, sacrifice that pint in the pub, it all adds up!
